How to Visit Shala River Without Booking a Tour

Yes. It is possible to visit Shala River without joining an organized tour, although it requires more planning.

The first step is driving to the Komani Lake Terminal, located approximately 70 km from Shkoder. The road takes around two hours and includes several mountain sections with uneven pavement and narrow roads, so driving carefully is recommended.

Once you arrive, you can park your vehicle in one of the paid parking areas near the tunnel before boarding an excursion boat to Shala River.

Independent boats usually depart around 9:30 AM during the tourist season and return in the afternoon. During July and August, tickets often sell out, so booking in advance is highly recommended.

For travelers who prefer a stress-free experience, an organized day tour from Tirana, Shkoder, Durres, or Lezha includes transportation, boat tickets, and assistance throughout the day.

Parking attendants are present during the tourist season, and vehicles remain parked there until the boats return in the afternoon.

During peak season, arriving 30–45 minutes before your boat departure is recommended to secure parking and complete boarding without rushing.

Boat Departure Times

Boat departures to Shala River operate daily from mid-May until mid-October.

Most excursion boats leave between 9:00 and 9:30 AM, while return departures from Shala River usually begin around 3:00 PM, arriving back at Komani Lake at approximately 3:30–3:45 PM.

Schedules may vary slightly depending on weather conditions and water levels, so checking your departure time in advance is always recommended.

Is the Road to Komani Lake Difficult?

This is one of the questions we receive most often.
