Getting to Komani Lake is only half of the work. Once you arrive, you still need to know where to catch the boat to Shala River, where to park, and how to find the right boat before the trip starts. If it’s your first time here, that part can feel a little confusing, since there are several boat operators working around the lake, so you should not simply get on the first boat you see.

Here is what you need to know before you arrive.

Parking at Komani Lake

The map below shows the parking situation as you come down the road toward the lake. The blue P signs mark official paid parking, running somewhere between 5 and 10 euros depending on the lot. The red no-entry car icons mark spots where parking simply isn’t allowed. If you leave your car in one of those, the local police will fine you, so it’s not worth the risk even if a spot looks open. The small ship icon marks where our boats actually depart from, and the tunnel icon shows a short 470-meter tunnel you’ll walk through on the way down to the water.

Where to Find Your Shala River Boat at Komani Lake

Once you’ve walked through the tunnel and reached the shoreline, you may be wondering where to get the boat to Shala River. If you are travelling with North Albania Boat, look for our beach flag. Head toward the flag, and our team will take it from there, checking you in and getting you settled before the boat sets off.

What Time Should You Get There?

We recommend arriving a little earlier than the scheduled check-in time rather than right at the last minute. This allows anough time for boarding and ensures you are all set up for the journey. If you’ve booked a tour with bus transfer included, this is already handled for you. If you’re driving to Komani Lake yourself, make sure you have enough time for parking and the walk down through the tunnel, especially in July and August when the whole area gets busier than usually.

Getting there a little early provides enough time for you to check in, get settled, and start the tour without rushing into it.

What to Bring When You Arrive at Komani Lake?

Although you don’t need to bring much for the trip, it is worth knowing what to pack for a Shala River day trip. Bring your swimwear, towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, drinking water, comfortable shoes, and some cash since there are no ATMs at Shala River. A small day bag is much easier to manage than a full suitcase, since you’ll be moving between the car, the tunnel, and the boat. If you’re planning to swim, a waterproof case for your phone is worth having too.

It’s also a good idea to keep your booking details and your tour operator’s contact information on your phone. That way, if you are unsure about the meeting point or departure time, you can quickly check the details provided on the online confirmation ticket.

Once You’re on the Boat

Once you have found the North Albania Boat check-in area and boarded your boat, there is nothing else you need to worry about. This is where the fun part begins.

The boat takes you through Komani Lake and into the mountains. The route passes through narrow sections of the lake, with steep cliffs and green mountains on both sides. Keep your camera ready because the views change throughout the journey.

As you get closer to Shala River, the landscape becomes even more impressive. The canyon gets narrower and the water starts to take on the bright turquoise colour that Shala River is known for. After the boat reaches the river, you will have time to swim, relax by the water, explore the area, and enjoy the scenery.
