How to Get to Shala River in Albania

Shala River is not a place you can simply drive to. It is a natural gem hidden deep in a canyon in the Albanian Alps, and the main way to reach it is by boat from Komani Lake. That might sound a little complicated at first, but how to get to Shala River is quite simple once you know the route.

Whether you are coming from Tirana, Shkoder, Durres, Lezhe, or another part of Albania, the trip follows the same basic route: get to Komani Lake, book a boat tour across the lake, and then continue to the Shala River for about 4,5-5 hours of free time.

If you are already searching for how to get to Shala River, here is everything you need to know before you go.

Why Can’t You Drive to Shala River?

One of the first questions visitors ask is whether they can just drive to Shala River.

The reason for that actually goes back several decades. When the hydroelectric dam was built on the Drin River, the lower part of the valley was flooded. This created what we now know as Komani Lake and changed the old roads and routes through the area.

Today, the lake crossing is the main way into this part of the mountains. The only way to get to Shala River is by boat from Komani Lake., and the boats travel through the narrow parts of the Lake before they reach the crystal-clear waters of Shala River.

But how to get to Shala River? Here is the step-by-step guide:

Step One: Get to Komani Lake

Before you can take the boat to Shala River, you first need to get to the port at Komani. The best way to get there depends on where you are staying.

Fra Tirana

Tirana is around 2.5 to 3 hours from Komani by road. The driving route takes you north towards Shkoder and then into the mountains.

The road becomes narrower and more winding as you get closer to Komani Lake, which is why many visitors prefer to join an organized tour instead of driving themselves.

Starting from Tirana also means an early morning start, but everything is arranged for you, so you can simply meet the bus and enjoy the trip.

If you are joining our tour from Tirana, you can find our exact pickup location here:

From Shkoder

If you are staying in Shkoder, getting to Komani is much easier.

The drive usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on road conditions and traffic. This is one of the most popular options for people looking for how to get to Shala River without spending too much time on the road.

Shkoder is also a good place to stay if you are planning to visit Komani Lake, Shala River, and other parts of northern Albania.

If you are joining our tour from Shkoder, you can find our exact pickup location here:

From Lezhe or Durres

If you are coming from Lezhe or Durres, you will have a longer drive to Komani.

Depending on where you start and the traffic that morning, the drive can take around 2 to 3 hours.

Because of this, tours from these areas usually leave early in the morning. The earlier start gives you enough time to reach Komani and catch the boat to Shala River.

Step Two: Take the Boat Across Komani Lake

Once you arrive at Komani, the road trip is over and the boat journey begins.

The boat ride across Komani Lake takes around 45 minutes. In comparison to the other boat tour operators, our faster route means that you can dodge the crowds and spend more time at the Shala River.

However, the lake crossing is not just about getting to Shala River. The lake crossing itself is one of the highlights of the trip. Komani Lake is surrounded by high mountains, steep cliffs, green forests, and narrow sections of water that makes it feel like you are crossing through the Norwegian canyons.

As the boat moves through the lake, the landscape changes around you. You will pass small villages, bridges, rocky cliffs, and quiet parts of the lake where there is very little around you.

This is also why how to get to Shala River is a little different from getting to most tourist attractions in Albania. There is no normal road leading all the way to the destination. The boat ride is part of the experience.

After crossing the lake, the boat reaches the entrance to Shala River. This is where the scenery changes again. The water becomes a bright turquoise color, the canyon gets narrower, and you finally arrive at the part of Shala River that you have probably seen in the pictures.

Can You Get to Shala River on Your Own?

Yes, it is possible to plan the trip yourself, but it can be harder than it sounds.

You first need to arrange transport to Komani Lake and then find a boat that goes to Shala River. Boat schedules can also change, especially in the high season. You also need to make sure that your transport back to Komani matches your plans for the day.

For someone who knows the area, this may not be a problem. But if it is your first time visiting northern Albania, it can make the day more stressful. This is why most visitors choose an organized tour.

With an organized tour, the transport to Komani Lake, the boat trip, and the return journey are arranged in advance. You do not have to worry about finding the terminal, buying separate tickets, or working out how to get back at the end of the day. You simply meet at the pickup point and enjoy the trip.

Will all these in mind, choosing the right boat tour operator is also an important part of the trip.

North Albania Boat uses faster and comfortable boats, which means you can reach Shala River earlier and enjoy the canyon before it gets too busy. The faster journey also gives you more time to take in the views along Komani Lake instead of spending most of the day on the water.

During the summer, we also offer a special package that includes a stop at “5 Stinet Restaurant”, where you can enjoy lunch right by the lake and take a break before continuing your day.
