Travelling to Shala River with Dogs: Everything You Need to Know

Shala River (Lumi i Shales) is extremely dog-friendly. You can always bring your own as long as they remain under your supervision. The area has its own stray dogs that are extremely friendly and hang around the riverbanks, guesthouses, and boats.

If you’re planning to visit Shala River with your dog, the good news is that it’s usually possible. With North Albania Boat, you can bring your dog on board as long as they are well-behaved and remain under your supervision throughout the trip. Visiting Shala River with dogs has become an increasingly popular choice for travellers who don’t want to leave their pets behind while exploring northern Albania.

With its peaceful natural surroundings, fresh mountain air, and wide pebble beach, Shala River can be a fantastic day out for both you and your four-legged companion. A little preparation before you travel will help ensure the experience is comfortable for everyone on board.

Is Shala River Dog-Friendly?

Yes. Shala River is generally considered a dog-friendly destination, particularly for owners whose dogs enjoy spending time outdoors.

Unlike busy towns or crowded tourist attractions, the area offers open space, clean mountain air, and plenty of room to relax by the water. Once you arrive, there’s no fixed itinerary to follow. Most visitors spend their time swimming, taking photographs, or simply relaxing, making it easy to enjoy the day at their own pace with the dogs.

The only part of the trip that requires a little planning is the boat journey across Komani Lake.

Swimmers enjoy the crystal-clear turquoise river in the centre frame, and a small floating cabana sits mid-river. Can Dogs Travel on the Boat?

If you book a boat tour with North Albania Boat, you can bring you dog as well.

Dogs are welcome on the excursion boats that travel between Komani Lake and Shala River. Since you’ll be sharing the boat with other passengers, your dog should remain under your supervision throughout the journey.

We recommend you bring a lead, especially if your dog is energetic or unfamiliar with boats. Smaller dogs often feel more comfortable in a carrier or on their owner’s lap. Larger dogs usually settle down once the boat is underway.

If you’re travelling during July or August, when tours are busiest, it’s always a good idea to let the operator know in advance that you’ll be bringing a dog.

Will My Dog Enjoy the Boat Ride?

Every dog is different, but from our experience we can say that most adapt surprisingly quickly to the journey.

The boat ride from Komani Lake to Shala River lasts around 45 minutes and is usually smooth. Many dogs simply lie down and relax for the duration of the trip while enjoying the fresh air.

If this is your dog’s first time on a boat, bringing a familiar blanket or favourite toy can help them feel more comfortable during the lake crossing.

Is It Safe for Dogs to Swim?

Many dogs love swimming in Shala River, but owners should remember that the water is much colder than it looks.

Even in the middle of summer, the river remains around 14–16°C, as it is fed by snowmelt from the جبال الألب الألبانية. While some dogs happily jump straight in, others may only paddle along the shoreline, and that’s perfectly normal.

Allow your dog to enter the water at their own pace and avoid encouraging long swims, particularly if they are small, old, or unused to cold water.

The Shala River Beach

Shala River doesn’t have a sandy beach. Instead, the shoreline is covered with smooth pebbles of different sizes.

Most dogs adapt quickly, although those that have only walked on sand or grass may need a few moments to get used to the uneven surface. The beach is spacious enough to find a quiet place to sit, and there are shaded areas throughout the day and sunbeds where both you and your dog can escape the summer sun.

What Should You Bring for Your Dog?

Although the area caters to hundreds of tourists every day, it’s best to bring everything your dog might need for the day. Packing a few essentials will make the trip much easier for both you and your dog.

We recommend bringing:

  • Fresh drinking water
  • A collapsible water bowl
  • Dog food or treats
  • A lead
  • Waste bags
  • A towel
  • A blanket or mat
  • Any medication your dog may need

Are There Any Risks?

Shala River is a safe destination for dogs, but like any outdoor environment, a few sensible precautions are worth taking.

During the summer months, temperatures can become very warm around midday, so make sure your dog always has access to shade and fresh-drinking water. Keep an eye on them near deeper sections of the river. Also, avoid letting them wander too far along the shoreline unsupervised.

If your dog is easily stressed by crowds, visiting Shala River with dogs during June or September usually provides a quieter and more relaxed experience.
