Which boat trip in Albania is right for you? An honest comparison from the Shala River crew

If you want warm sea and swimming off the boat, take a boat trip on the south coast of Albania, from Ksamil, Sarande, Himare or Vlore. If you’d rather have mountains around you and a cold river swim, take the boat from Komani Lake to Shala River in the north.

We run boat tours to Shala River, so keep in mind that we’re biased. For every trip that isn’t ours, we show where the price comes from and when we checked it. Boat trips in Albania split into two very different days out, and the right one depends on where you’re staying and what kind of water you want.

Which boat trip in Albania suits you?

You want warm sea and swimming

Go to Himare, or to Sarande and Ksamil. The Ksamil islands loop is the cheapest trip in the table at €10–15 per person for 2–3 hours. From Himare, group boats go to Pirate’s Cave for about €30 per person, or spend a full day around Grama Bay for about €60.

Skip it if you’re travelling in October and haven’t called ahead. Many south-coast operators are closing by then, and quiet days can be cancelled or merged when there aren’t enough passengers (himara.net).

You want caves and some history

Go to Vlore for a Karaburun–Sazan trip. The sea around Sazan island is the Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park (himara.net). Group trips take 4–6 hours and cost €45–70 per person.

Skip it if you only have a morning. Group trips run 4–6 hours.

You want mountains, and you’re based in Tirana or Shkoder

Go to Shala. The boat runs up Komani Lake between steep limestone cliffs, and you get 4.5–5 hours at the river. From Shkoder, our bus leaves at 06:45 and has you back by about 17:00. From Tirana, it’s a 14-hour day.

Skip it if you want warm water. The river is 15–18 °C, even in summer.

Travelling with kids

For small children, the Ksamil islands loop is the shortest trip in the table (2–3 hours). At Shala, children up to 5 ride free and every passenger gets a life jacket. From Koman the day runs 09:00–15:30. We cover snacks, swimming and timing in our guide to Shala River with kids.

Skip Shala if your children won’t cope with a 12–14 hour day from a city. In that case, drive to Koman yourself and do the 09:00 boat only.

Staying in Durres? Your two real options

Durres is on the sea, but the boat trips covered in this guide start elsewhere. You have two realistic choices, and both make for a long day.

  1. Our Durres to Shala River day: €55 per person with bus transport. Check-in is at 05:00 near KFC, the bus leaves at 05:15, and you’re back in Durres at about 19:00. That’s 14 hours, about 4.5–5 of them at the river.
  2. Head south to Vlore for a Karaburun–Sazan group trip (4–6 hours on the boat, €45–70 per person), plus the drive south.

We haven’t checked short boat trips from Durres beach itself, so we don’t list prices for them here.

Sea trips in the south: what to know before you book

We don’t run boats on the coast, so this part is short and based on one published source: himara.net’s Albanian Riviera boat tour price guide (published 23 February 2026, checked October 2026). Its booking advice by month is the most useful part. In May and early June, call ahead because not every operator has started. In July, book group trips a day ahead, and in August one to two days ahead. September is fine for walk-ups. October means calling ahead again.

Ksamil and Sarande

The Ksamil trip is a 2–3 hour group loop around the small islands off the beach, at €10–15 per person. From Sarande you can join a group cruise boat (3–4 hours, €18–25 per person) or a speedboat (3–4 hours, €20–40 per person). Private boats there are priced for the whole boat: €240–350 for 4–5 hours to Kakome, Krorez and Soldier Beach, and €500–880 for a full day. The half-day boats take up to 6–8 people and the full-day boats up to 6–10.

Before you pay, ask whether snorkel gear is included and how many stops you’ll make.

Himare and the Riviera coves

Himare has the most choice for swimming stops. Group trips to Pirate’s Cave take 2.5–4 hours and cost about €30 per person. A Gjipe trip is about €40 per person for 3–3.5 hours. A full day to Grama Bay is about €60 per person. Private boats from Himare take a maximum of 5 people. Pirate’s Cave costs €150 in low season and €170 in high season, for the whole boat.

Vlore, Karaburun and Sazan

This is the trip for sea caves and Sazan island. Group trips run 4–6 hours at €45–70 per person. Some operators add extra cave stops, so ask what’s on the route. Ask how long you’ll spend swimming versus sailing, because on a 6-hour trip the answer varies a lot.

Komani Lake to Shala River: the boat trip we run every day

This is the trip we know best. We’ve run it since 2023, with a daily departure from April to October. People sometimes search for it as a river cruise. In practice the boat ride is about 45 minutes out (09:30–10:15) and 30 minutes back (15:00–15:30), and you spend most of the day at Shala itself. For every option we offer from Koman, see our full guide to Komani Lake boat tours.

The first part of the ride is on the lake, between steep cliffs. We make scenic stops on the way where you can take photos and enjoy the scenery. At Shala you have 4.5–5 hours for swimming, photos and lunch at one of the small riverside restaurants. If you’re not sure where the lake ends and the river begins, read the difference between Shala River and Komani Lake.

What it costs and what’s included

The ticket is €25 per person from Koman, including the boat, fees and tax. Children aged 0–5 ride free. You can reserve for free and pay cash on the day, or pay online by PayPal and get a mobile ticket straight away. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour.

The ticket doesn’t cover getting to Koman, food and drinks, or the zipline, canoe and camping at Shala. If you drive, there’s parking near the Koman terminal, but the spots by the dock fill quickly in high season.

The boat is a WaterMate LR9 safari boat for a maximum of 20 passengers. It has 180° views, a fridge and power banks on board, and life jackets for everyone.

The honest downsides

  • The water is cold. Shala stays at 15–18 °C even in summer. Expect a quick dip rather than a long swim.
  • From Tirana or Durres it’s a 14-hour day with a 05:00 or 05:15 check-in. If you can sleep in Shkoder the night before, the day is two hours shorter.
  • July and August are busy. Book a few days ahead. For last-minute bookings, message us on WhatsApp, but in peak season we can’t promise a seat.
  • You swim in a river at Shala. If sea swimming is the point of your holiday, go south.
  • Food isn’t included, so budget for lunch at the river.

Questions to ask before you book a boat tour in Albania

These apply to any operator, including us.

  1. Is the price per person or per boat? Private trips on the coast are usually priced per boat, for 5–10 people. A low price can mean one or the other.
  2. What exactly is included? Ask about fuel, snorkel gear, park or entry fees and drinks. Our Shala ticket includes fees and tax but not food.
  3. What happens if the weather turns? Our private tour runs in most weather on the canyon route. If conditions are unsafe, you get a full refund or a new date. On the open sea, ask before you pay.
  4. How long are you actually on the boat? A “6-hour trip” can mean 90 minutes on the water and a long beach stop. That’s fine if you know it in advance.

Boat trips in Albania: frequently asked questions

How much does a boat trip in Albania cost?

Group trips on the south coast cost about €10–70 per person. They range from €10–15 for the Ksamil islands loop to €45–70 for Karaburun–Sazan from Vlore (himara.net, checked October 2026). Private boats are priced per boat, from €150–170 for Pirate’s Cave in Himare (max 5 people) to €500–880 for a full private day from Sarande. Our Komani Lake to Shala River ticket is €25 per person from Koman, or €40–55 with the bus from a city.

Where are the best boat trips in Albania?

It depends on what you want. For a cheap, short sea trip, go to Ksamil. Himare is best for swimming stops in coves, and Vlore for caves and Sazan island. For mountains, take the Komani Lake to Shala River boat.

Can you hire a private boat in Albania?

Yes. On the coast, private boats are priced for the whole boat. For example, Himare’s Pirate’s Cave trip costs €150–170 for up to 5 people (himara.net, checked October 2026). Our private Shala River boat is €250 for the whole boat, up to 8 people.

When is boat trip season in Albania?

On the south coast, most boats run from June to September, with fewer in May and October, when you should call ahead. Our Shala boats run daily from April to October, with a second departure in July and August. Those two months are the busiest, and May and September are quieter.

Do I need to be able to swim to do a boat trip?

Not on our Shala boat: every passenger gets a life jacket and swimming is optional. The water is 15–18 °C, so most swims are short. On the coast, group tours usually include life jackets (himara.net), but check with the operator.

Is the Shala River boat trip worth it if I’m staying on the coast?

From Durres, yes, if you’re happy with a 14-hour day that starts at 05:00. From the far south (Sarande, Ksamil) we don’t run pickups, and we wouldn’t plan it as a day trip. More on this in is a day trip to Shala River worth it?

Can I do a boat trip from Tirana?

Tirana is inland, so any boat trip means travelling first. Our Tirana package costs €50 per person with the bus included. Check-in is at 05:15 and you’re back at about 19:30. The other option is to travel south to Vlore for a Karaburun–Sazan trip.

If you want the mountains, the boat leaves Koman every morning from April to October.
