Can you drive to Shala River?

No. There is no road to the Shala River Albania beach. The only access is by boat from the Komani Lake terminal. Even if you drive to Koman, you still need a boat for the final section.

How long is the boat ride to Shala River?

The crossing from the Komani terminal to the Shala River beach takes approximately 45 minutes each way, passing through the Komani Lake canyon.

Is Shala River the same as Komani Lake?

They are connected but different. Komani Lake is the reservoir, a large artificial lake created by a dam on the Drin River in the 1980s. Shala River Albania is a natural river that flows into the reservoir. The boat trip crosses Komani Lake and then enters the Shala River canyon at the confluence.

Is it safe for children?

Yes. The pebble beach has calm shallow water at the edges, the boat crossings are stable, and the canyon is not a technical environment. Water shoes are recommended for children due to the uneven pebble terrain.

The colour comes from the source. The river is fed by springs and snowmelt from the Albanian Alps and runs over limestone, so it carries almost no sediment. That is also why it stays cold in July.

Our boats check in at 9:00 am and leave at 9:30 am every day of the season. In July and August there is a second departure, with check-in at 11:00 am. The boat tour from Komani Lake to Shala River costs €25 per person. Arrive at least 45 minutes early in peak season to find parking, and book in advance in July and August when demand is highest.

The journey takes about 45 minutes each way. Around the halfway point is the narrowest section, where the canyon pinches to what feels like a few boat widths across, and the reflections in the water are extraordinary. This is where most photographs get taken. Along the way you pass hidden coves, small waterfalls in spring, and villages that can only be reached by boat.

In July and August, it is busy. There are sunbeds, music, several restaurants and bars operating along the river, and a fairly constant flow of boats. The water and scenery are identical, but the atmosphere is closer to a beach club than a wilderness escape. Many people enjoy it exactly like that. If you came for solitude, June or September is when you want to be there.

Lunch by the river. Several restaurants along the bank serve grilled trout, byrek, salads and cold drinks. Bring cash: the restaurants do not take cards and there is no ATM at the river.

Most people visit Shala River as a day trip. With the 9:30 am boat you arrive at about 10:15 am and have 4.5 to 5 hours at the river before the 3:00 pm boat back. That is enough time to swim, eat lunch, kayak or walk up to the viewpoint.

If you want a slower pace, stay overnight. The valley changes once the day boats leave: it goes quiet, the light softens, and you have the river almost to yourself in the evening and early morning.
