Where Koman Lake Is and Why the Boat Tour Starts There<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Koman is a small village in northern Albania, sitting at the eastern end of Komani Lake. It’s the closest access point to the water and the only place where boats depart for Shala River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s no road to Shala River itself. The lake and the canyon stand in the way, so the only way in is by boat from Koman. That’s true whether you’re booking a tour or showing up on your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most travellers reach Koman in one of two ways: as part of an organised boat tour that includes bus transport from Tirana, Shkoder, Durres, or Lezhe, or by driving there themselves and starting the boat trip directly from the terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article focuses on the second option, what the tour actually looks like once you’re already at Koman and ready to board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting to the Koman Terminal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you’re driving yourself, head to the Koman tunnel (coordinates: 42.0721\u00b0 N, 20.0993\u00b0 E). There’s paid parking near the terminal. During the summer season, Komani Lake is packed with tourists, so come at the terminal earlier than the boat departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’ve arrived by bus or as part of a wider Albanian Alps itinerary<\/a><\/strong> and stopped overnight near Koman, the same route applies. The terminal is the starting point no matter how you got there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Time the Boats Leave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Shala River tour from Koman Lake starts early in the morning. Boats from Koman Lake typically depart at 9:30 am. Arriving with time to spare is worth it, since the terminal area gets busy during the season with several boats loading around the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boat Ride: What to Expect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The crossing from Koman Lake to Shala River takes about 45 minutes each way. This isn’t dead time before the destination, instead, it’s one of the best parts of the whole trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first 15 to 20 minutes, the lake is wide and the canyon walls sit at a distance. Then the channel narrows, and the scale of the place becomes obvious. Walls that looked like ordinary hills from the road turn out to be hundreds of metres of limestone hills rising straight from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around the halfway point, the canyon is at its narrowest. This is where most people go quiet and most of the photos get taken. The water shifts colour as the depth changes, from a deep blue-green at the canyon to pale turquoise near the shallows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boat then turns north into the Shala River canyon for the final stretch, where the water gets even clearer and the walls close in further. You’ll know you’re close when the canyon opens up to the pebble beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boat docks directly on the pebble beach. You’ll have roughly 4 to 4.5 hours here before the return crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s enough time to swim, eat, and explore without feeling rushed. The water is cold, clear, and genuinely the colour you’ve seen in photos. Most people get in within the first half hour, while they’re still warm from the boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boat departs Shala River around 17:00 pm and heads back across the lake to Koman, another 45-minute crossing. The afternoon light hits the canyon walls differently than the morning, and a lot of people end up with their best photos on the way back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
